The privatization of telecommunication

We live in a world in which telecommunication is a fundamental service which is in constant development. Thanks to the Globalization of the media and telecommunication, the information travels greatly around the world, and helped to create a Global communication.
For most of the twentieth century, the State was monopolizing the national communication. In the 1990’s, the monopole of the Post, Telegraph and Telecommunication were constrained to give the flow to the private communication. This change has started from the Western countries and has affected 99% of the world’s communication. This privatization was mainly created in order to make the coasts affordable for small users.
In the 1980’s the monopoly regulation was criticized because it did not take the innovations into account. For instance, computing, fibre-optic cables and fax machines. Thing which doesn’t go in favor of the improvement of the telecommunication. That’s why the privatization was the only solution since it would create competitiveness and therefore an increase in its quality and a decrease in prices.
US president Ronald Reagan (1984) introduced a new policy (open skies), which consisted on eliminating the public monopoly and encouraging the private one. For instance, the American Telephone and Telegraph, which was the biggest US telecom cooperation, was split into 22 local companies. As a result, the US telecommunication sector was privatized and liberalized.
A year later, Britain decided to privatize 51% of the British telecom. In the other hand, Japan allowed the partial privatization of their national operator (NITT), followed by Europe which defined the privatization of telecommunication as being “absolutely crucial”. However, most of European countries with the Germany’s Deutshe Telecom proceeded more slowly in this process comparing to the others.
This privatization generated a big impact within the telecommunication sector and policy, which was mainly leaded by the US and Europe.
I personally think that nowadays, the privatization of the telecommunication has a lot of benefits. Indeed, all people around the world would have the same amount to pay in order to have the same access and quality of the service. Also, because of the competitiveness, the service of telecommunication is more efficient and is in constant improvement. However, this service has also its inconveniences since it can not be accessed by everyone since it is payable, and people who cannot afford to pay for it will opt for the public services because they don’t have the same opportunity as others. Plus, there are some marginalized regions in which the quality is not the same as the other places. So even if it is the same price for everyone, the result could not be the same.

To fix this issue, I think that the private sectors should enlarge their networks so everyone can beneficiate from their services, and adapt their prices in favor of the quality of life of each region in order to create an equal access for everyone.

Discontents of cultural globalization

Even though Western cultural globalization has allowed major and important developments all around the world, it also had create discontent in countries, specifically Islamic ones. In fact, many countries such as China or Iran, want to restrict the Western reception of television through licensing regimes judging the content inappropriate due to sexual content or to how the women is represented in the media. For example, in Asia, the Western culture displayed through television is seen as undermining traditional values as for China, the Disney movie Mulan was delayed because the government didn’t like or appreciate the portrayal of the Chinese culture made in the movie. Instead of preferring Western cultural content, India and China choose to reinforce their own culture and values through TV. Indeed, in India, two TV shows based on Hindu epics, named Ramayan and Mahabharat, had a great impact on the society and a huge success in the county which resulted in the production of more rel...

The advent of popular media

The enlargement of printing press and the globalization of new agencies had a huge impact on the worldwide newspaper agency. In fact, it has been used to emphasize the advances in printing technology, meaning that even the newspaper written in a Non-European language can be printed and distributed, to figure out many aspects such as nationalism, media cultures and advertising.             The end of nineteenth century was marked by a huge expansion of print media. Indeed, by 1870 more than 140 newspapers were being printed in different languages such as Arabic and Indian. By 1890, Europe has seen a quick expansion of the popular press and an increase in readership, especially in France and Britain.             Newspapers were also used in order to highlight the nationalist side within countries. For example, Sun Yat Sen who is a nationalist Chinese leader created a daily pa...
